TE 848 - Writing Instruction and Assessment

TE 848 explores the complexities of writing and the development of ourselves as writers and/or teachers of writing. The relationship between reading and writing as well as purpose and genre are also investigated in order to design effective writing instruction. The course began with the reading assignment of Markus Zusak's The Book Thief to introduce us to the firey desire to read and write. The course emphasizes how reading and writing are infinitely connected.

TE 838 - Children’s Literature in Film

TE 838 explores how children’s books translate into films through critical analysis of the film’s fidelity to the original and viewing films as interpretations of the texts rather than verbatim motion pictures of our imaginations. The course was divided into four modules:

  • Learning to “Read” Books and Film;

  • Fidelity to the Original;

  • Books and Films as Popular Culture; and

  • Teaching as a Form of Interpretation.

 

Reading and and viewing two film verisions of books and films was the most interesting aspect of this course. The first was E.B. White's Charlotte's Web with film verisions from 1973 and 2006.  And the second was Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with film versions from 1971 and 2005. This course looked at how and why the interpreations were unalike.

TE 836 - Awards and Classics of Children's Literature

TE 836 explores children’s books that have been deemed “award winners” and “classics” in order to foster working criteria for evaluating literature selections for children. Award granting processes and “classic” designations were examined as well as scholarship regarding particular aspects of these areas. What I took away most from this course was the complexity and arbitrary nature of how awards are established and awarded. The business and marketing of books is evidently a messy industry where publishing companies and school districts grapple with contracts and book lists year after year.
