EAD 864 - Adult Career Development

Instructor: Steven Weiland   |   Fall 2012

EAD 864 explores the nature of work in its many forms and spaces through autobiographical and biographical narratives and films in order to inquire into how individuals have found ways to give meaning to their work. This was a pivotal course for me as I found exactly what I was searching to learn about within this course. Here, it was clear that the varied experiences of one’s life form the threads of adult life and relative career development. What I appreciated most about this course was the range of experiences the readings and films covered. For example, medical doctor Danielle Ofri writes of her personal experiences with understanding and communicating the medical needs of individual patients in Incidental Findings: Lessons from My Patients in the Art of Medicine. Meanwhile, author and speaker Parker Palmer candidly writes of his personal struggles with depression and finding vocation in Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation. In essence, no road is perfectly paved as no road should be.

For further investigation of topics related to this course, I highly recommend the film, Okuribito (Departures, 2008).

EAD 860 - The Concept of the Learning Society

Instructors: Steven Weiland and

                       Graham  McKeague  |   Summer 2013

EAD 860 explores the various meanings of “the learning society” by examining the primary domains and actives of the learning society in their historical, social, economic, and cultural contexts as well as the experiences and views of individuals living and working in the learning society. One of my favorite books in the program was medical doctor Atul Gawande’s Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance. It resonated with me personally for a number of reasons most notably the chapter entitled, “The Score,” which highlighted the vast medical advancements made in obstetrics over time. Further video viewings of and readings from Dr. Gawande introduced the importance of checklists and coaching. I now consider checklists and coaching in almost everything I do.

For further investigation of topics related to this course, I highly recommend the film, Le papillon (The Butterfly, 2002).
